◇ THE PROBLEM

Getting score-checkers to actually watch.

The brief I inherited, and why it was harder than "make the videos better."

Cricbuzz's reputation is simple: open the app, see the score, close the app. Fast, reliable, no fuss. The video section, though, was a different story. It existed — highlights, interviews, analysis — but users walked straight past it, the way you'd walk past a shop with a "Sale" banner you've stopped believing in.

Even when someone did land on a video, they didn't stay. Drop-offs were high, retention was close to nothing. And that was the brief: fix this without turning Cricbuzz into Hotstar. Platforms like Hotstar, JioCinema, Crex are content-first by design. Cricbuzz had to stay scoring-first, and make room for content on the side — not replace the plate.

THE CONSTRAINT

Stay scoring-first. Don't chase Hotstar's identity. Make room for content on the side, not on the throne.

RESEARCH

what the users actually said

Three users. Very different relationships with the app. Their pain kept circling back to the same three gaps. This is a textbook Hick's Law problem — the more choices we threw at them, the harder every single one became.

"It feels like we are not in Cricbuzz at all… we need branding, like Zomato or Swiggy, where you always know which app you are in."

— Keerthana, 30 · new user

"These videos seem to be bigger… they look more clickable — visibility is better."

— Ritvik, 25 · 7-year loyalist

"The overlay headline makes it cluttered — I'm not able to see what the thumbnail is at a glance."

— Ganesh, 32 · journalist
DECISIONS

Four calls that shaped everything else

Before touching a single pixel, four decisions had to land. Each one came with a tradeoff — and each one shows up in the numbers on the other side of this page.

01
Stay scoring-first. Don't chase Hotstar.

Cricbuzz's identity is speed to the score. Content had to live on the side of that identity, never on top of it.

02
Ship Buzz as Phase 0.

A 30-second ask instead of an 8-minute one — a low-stakes front door before we redesigned the whole room.

03
The anglerfish carousel.

One large hero thumbnail as the lure. Everything else follows once the first click happens — not before.

04
Trending as a stand-in for Favourites.

Backend blocked Favourites. Trending shipped the value now, personalization later.

◇ THE PROCESS

Two seasons, three phases.

From listening to shipping to what's still open.

01
Research · three voices

Sat down with three users — a new joiner, a 7-year loyalist, a cricket journalist. Different loyalties, same three gaps: no short content, no personalization, cluttered cards.

02
Phase 0 · Buzz

30-second clips cut from the main videos, sitting right at the top of the Videos page. Not a phase — a front door. Ask for less. Get more people through.

03
Phase 1 · clean the room

One hero thumbnail leads. Titles moved off the thumbnail and into the space below. Trending sections replaced the buffet. Only what engineering could ship — the rest queued for Phase 2.

04
Phase 2 · in progress

A richer 1-big-plus-2-small carousel. Player and team pages that deliver Favourites' intent without waiting on the backend. And a poll layer — a small moment of participation baked into the scroll.

The signal behind the quotes.

Sample size was small on purpose — three users, three lives, three loyalty depths. The pain didn't diverge.

◇ IMPACT

By the numbers.

IPL 2025 vs. IPL 2026. Daily averages. Nothing cherry-picked.

AVG. WATCH TIME
+46%
Per user, per day. 1,265s → 1,846s.
UNIQUE USERS
+47%
270k → 397k daily. Nearly half again as many people through the door.
TOTAL VIEWS
+32%
5.2M → 6.8M daily. From a phase that "just" moved some text and cleaned up a carousel.
REFLECTION

small asks beat big pitches

"Buzz didn't win by being better content. It won by asking for 30 seconds instead of 10 minutes. Half the battle in engagement design isn't quality — it's how much you're asking someone to commit to before they've even decided if they like you."
